Selection guide

How to choose a woodworking press

A press is selected around the assembly or lamination process, workpiece area, required pressure distribution, opening and cycle. Hot, cold and vacuum processes have different platen, heating, control and material requirements.

Describe the product, glue or resin, workpiece dimensions, layer construction, pressure requirement, temperature if applicable, loading method and target cycle. Sample trials may be needed for a new material process.

Key factors to compare

Factor
What to confirm
Why it matters
Process type
Cold press, hot press, membrane or vacuum application
Defines the basic machine and control arrangement.
Workpiece and opening
Platen size, daylight opening, number of layers and stroke
Confirms the load fits the press.
Pressure distribution
Required total force and uniformity across the workpiece
Important for consistent bonding and dimensional results.
Temperature and cycle
Heating method, operating temperature, dwell and cooling needs
Changes productivity and process control.
Loading and safety
Manual or automated handling, guarding and local requirements
Affects layout and operating procedure.

Buying questions

Press Machines FAQ

These answers help prepare a useful configuration request. Final technical data is confirmed for the selected machine.

Send workpiece construction and size, adhesive, required pressure, temperature, dwell time, loading method and expected cycles per shift.

Use the largest workpiece plus loading clearance, required opening and the number of workpieces or layers processed in one cycle.

A quotation can define equipment configuration, but bonding results also depend on material, adhesive and process parameters. Trials may be appropriate.
